Library Loot: February 2-8

Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Claire from The Captive Reader and Marg from The Adventures of an Intrepid Reader that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries!

I’m an idiot, I looted a pile of books although I’m going home for the semester break on Sunday. But the weather has been grey and wet and stormy and I wanted a perfect cosy read for that but somehow my own books didn’t look as tempting last night. Also, my uni library has this system where you have to order books online and then they’ll unearth them for you from somewhere and you just have to pick them up. So yesterday I browsed the catalogue and hit order a bit too often, and when I picked up the books today I saw that I had also forgotten that I had ordered another book sometime this week, oops!

Howl’s Moving Castle (Diana Wynne Jones)

Seems like everyone’ read and loved this one, though I hadn’t ever heard of it before I started blogging. Cuppa tea and I’m curling up!

High Wages (Dorothy Whipple)

Persephone, though my edition is a Penguin, with the tiny print, some things never change 😉

Hand in Glove (Ngaio Marsh)

Obviously I had a craving for cosy books, and what could be more cosy than (golden age mystery) murder? ;P

Comedy in a Minor Key (Hans Keilson)

Saw this reviewed somewhere. A Dutch novella, I’m intrigued (also, I love that cover!).

Feminism: A Very Short Introduction (Margaret Walters)

Felt inspired by the Feminist Classics project, but haven’t had the time to read the books with anything like the concentration they deserve. So “very short” appealed to me.

The Theory of Absence: Subjectivity, Signification and Desire (Patrick Fuery)

I’m a nerd, or I would be if I hadn’t actually forgotten that I ordered this book.

About the voting (see previous post): I’m going to give you till Sunday, though the results look really interesting already! My tea’s ready and I’m going to curl up with the cosy books now.

What did you loot from the library this week?

  1. Wonderful Library Loot, Bina! That Ngaio Marsh book looks quite interesting! Hope you enjoy the very short introduction book on feminism. If you don’t mind a recommendation, there is a similar book called ‘Introducing Feminism : A graphic guide’ by Cathia Jenainati and Judy Groves. The subject it covers is the same but this is the graphic novel version 🙂

Hope you enjoy the semester break at home 🙂

    1. I thought I’d give one of the other queens of crime a chance 😉 There is a comic about feminism? How perfectly awesome, thanks for telling me about it! 🙂

  2. I’d love to find a copy of High Wages and Howl’s Moving Castle is wonderful. I too hadn’t heard of it before blogging and only read it this year.

  3. Enjoy Howl! I must say he is perfect for a yucky day. I wish I had my copy — the wind is whistling and whipping snow around my windows, and I could do with a nice fairy tale.

  4. What a wonderful mix of books. It’s wonderful what libraries have tucked away that you will only find if you browse the catalogue. I haven’t read Ngaio Marsh for years but I used to love her, and High Wages is a little gem. Hopefully you’ll be so swept away that you forget the size of the print!

    1. I love that there’s always something new to be discovered in the library 🙂 I really want to try Marsh, hope she will provide a cosy mystery. And I really enjoyed High Wages, though I should think about getting a looking glass for reading Penguin books 😉

  5. I agree love the cover for Comedy in a minor Key. I wonder if that’s the European cover since it has that appealing mystique appeal.

Nice to have a uni with a touch of a key and voila BOOKS! Could live in a library if that was permitted.

Great selections and look forward to hearing your thoughts on them. Library loot forever 🙂

    1. It might be the UK version, I’m not quite sure. But I love that cover 🙂

The uni library has to house a lot of books in other buildings all over the city because they have to get a copy of every book printed in Germany, I think. It’s bad for being spontaneous, but wonderful if you just want to pick up your books 🙂
